History

Seether formed in May 1999 in Pretoria, South Africa, under the name Saron Gas. With frontman Shaun Morgan as the band’s only original member since its 1999 formation and bassist Dale Stewart joining in January 2000 to become a core fixture, the band rebranded as Seether upon their 2002 U.S. breakthrough. Drawing heavily from the Nirvana and Alice in Chains playbook, they’ve built a reputation on crushing riffs and razor-sharp melodic instincts that define post-grunge.

South African Roots and American Invasion

When Saron Gas initially took shape in May 1999, the lineup included Shaun Morgan (vocals/guitar), bassist Tyronne Morris, drummer Dave Cohoe, and guitarist Johan Greyling, who departed shortly after the band’s formation. After Morris left in December 1999, Dale Stewart stepped in on bass the following January, solidifying the band’s foundation. Their late-2000 debut Fragile, released through South African indie label Musketeer Records, defied the pop-dominated local market and gained unexpected traction.

The band’s raw sound caught the attention of Wind-up Records, leading to a New York showcase and subsequent deal in 2001. However, the name Saron Gas proved problematic after 9/11—its similarity to the nerve agent sarin gas made the label uneasy, and Wind-up required the band to change it. In 2002, the band adopted Seether, inspired by Veruca Salt’s track of the same name. The U.S. relocation cost them drummer Dave Cohoe, who opted to return home for family reasons.

American Debut and Commercial Breakthrough

Seether dropped their U.S. debut Disclaimer on August 20, 2002, with session powerhouse Josh Freese handling drums. The record hit No. 92 on the Billboard 200, while lead single “Fine Again” topped the Active Rock chart and established the band’s presence. Disclaimer eventually moved over 500,000 units, earning RIAA Gold certification.

The game-changer arrived with Disclaimer II on June 15, 2004. This reimagined version of their debut featured remixed tracks and new material, including “Broken” with Evanescence’s Amy Lee. Released as a single on April 19, 2004, the track peaked at No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Broken” ultimately secured 4x Platinum status (4 million units) from the RIAA. Disclaimer II itself went Platinum (1 million units) and marked the first album to feature John Humphrey, who had joined as the band’s drummer in late 2003.

Musical Maturity and Chart Domination

Released May 24, 2005, third album Karma and Effect cracked the Billboard 200’s top 10 at No. 8, earning Platinum certification in the U.S. and Gold in Canada. Lead single “Remedy” spent a total of eight weeks atop the Mainstream Rock chart and received 2x Platinum certification (2 million units) in the January 8, 2025 RIAA update.

Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces, released October 23, 2007, found the band working with producer Howard Benson to refine their sonic approach. The Platinum-certified album spawned “Fake It,” which topped both the Mainstream Rock and Modern Rock charts, and “Rise Above This,” which reached No. 1 on Modern Rock. “Fake It” stands at 3x Platinum (3 million units) as of January 2025.

The album’s cover of George Michael’s “Careless Whisper” followed as a fourth single in 2009, later earning 2x Platinum certification (2 million units). Morgan wrote “Rise Above This” for his brother Eugene Welgemoed in an effort to help him through depression; Eugene died by suicide in August 2007 before hearing the finished song.

2010s Peak Era

Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray, released May 17, 2011, represented a collaboration with legendary producer Brendan O’Brien. The album moved 61,000 copies in its first week, landing at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. RIAA Gold-certified, the record’s lead single “Country Song” earned Billboard’s Active Rock Song of the Year for 2011 and achieved Platinum status (1 million units) as of January 2025.

After The Bicycle Music Company acquired Seether’s contract as part of its 2013 purchase of much of Wind-up Records’ catalog, the band released Isolate and Medicate through Bicycle on July 1, 2014. The album hit No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and earned Gold certification, with singles “Words as Weapons” and “Nobody Praying for Me” both going Platinum.

Poison the Parish, released May 12, 2017, marked Shaun Morgan’s first turn as sole producer. The album peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard 200, while lead single “Let You Down” topped the Mainstream Rock chart. Guitarist Corey Lowery joined the touring lineup in 2018 and became a full member in 2019.

2020s Output

Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum dropped August 28, 2020, as Corey Lowery’s first album as an official member. Landing at No. 37 on the Billboard 200, the record spawned three consecutive Mainstream Rock chart-toppers: “Dangerous,” “Bruised and Bloodied,” and “Wasteland.”

Lead single “Judas Mind” arrived in July 2024, paving the way for their ninth studio album, The Surface Seems So Far, released that September 20 as the band’s first record without a single acoustic track. Morgan handled production alone. In April 2026, the band released the four-track EP Beneath the Surface through Fantasy Records.

Musical Style and Influences

Seether’s sound occupies the intersection of post-grunge, alternative metal, and hard rock. The band employs down-tuned guitars for a heavier low end, favoring the quiet verse/explosive chorus dynamic that became grunge’s calling card. Shaun Morgan cites Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain as his primary influence, while also drawing from Alice in Chains, Deftones, and A Perfect Circle.

Lyrically, the band explores betrayal, heartbreak, isolation, self-loathing, and substance abuse struggles with unflinching introspection and raw honesty.

Lineup and Achievements

Since 2019, Seether has consisted of Shaun Morgan (vocals/rhythm guitar), Dale Stewart (bass/backing vocals), John Humphrey (drums), and Corey Lowery (lead guitar/backing vocals). Per the January 8, 2025 RIAA update, the band holds three Platinum albums (Disclaimer II, Karma and Effect, Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces) and three Gold albums (Disclaimer, Isolate and Medicate, Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray).

Seether reached its 10th No. 1 single on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart with “Judas Mind” in September 2024, and maintained a consistent presence at major rock festivals, including multiple appearances at Rock on the Range, along with Download Festival dates in 2008 and 2014. The band successfully completed a co-headlining tour with Skillet in 2024. Beyond the certifications, the lineup has largely held together — Stewart has played bass since January 2000, and Humphrey has drummed since 2003.
